Vale House is Adelaide's earliest surviving substantial residence, Vale House is listed on the South Australian Heritage Register and The National Estate. Built in the first 5 years of white settlement in South Australia, Vale House was occupied by several noted colonists including Captain Edward Frome and William Clark. In 1853 it was purchased by Philip Levi, well known influential businessman and pastoralist. During the following 96 years of ownership by the Levi family, Vale House became a popular centre of social activity for the Adelaide gentry.
The spacious rooms and elegant ballroom hosted celebrations of all descriptions, many a red jacketed rider enjoyed a stirrup cup under the shade of the enormous Morten Bay Fig tree, before setting out on the many fox hunts that began at Vale House. Vale House remained in the Levi family until 1948 when Philip's sole surviving niece left the property to the Walkerville Council. Since 1948 Vale House has been used as a boarding house, Council offices, a kiosk and manager's residence for the surrounding caravan park, its full heritage significance has not been fully appreciated until recently.
In 1999, after extensive research Vale House was restored and reformed into four separate self-contained luxury Apartments, featuring a gallery of early artworks of colonial Adelaide and a more detailed history of the house.
